Mattress merchant South Bay International finds success by adjusting to the times

by ERIK J. MARTIN

There’s no substitute for a restful, comfortable sleep. It’s little wonder, then, that Sleep Science mattresses have maintained their popularity at Costco since they were first introduced there 15 years ago, with members drawn to the company’s consistent emphasis on quality and value.

Here’s a look at its history.

Sweet dreams of success

Established in 1993, South Bay International began as a manufacturer of ergonomic foam products, evolving to include specialty bedding, including mattresses, adjustable bases, mattress toppers, pillows, bed frames and accessories.

By 2008, the business had transitioned to offer branded and private-label merchandise sold directly to retailers such as Costco, which carries the beds under the Sleep Science brand.

Innovating the sleep space

“We set out to create mattresses and adjustable beds with a commitment to producing the highest-quality products on the market. Our mattresses are made with the very finest high-density memory foams and natural latex, and incorporate our Wedge Edge to Edge support system, which was patented in 2003,” says Daniella Serven, CEO and chief operating officer of South Bay International. “Additionally, our adjustable bases [see “Aces of base”] offer state-of-the-art features.

“Our adjustable beds have also evolved to include a structural design enhancement that has resulted in a compact shipping design,” Serven continues. “As a result, our products are more conveniently delivered to a Costco member’s door and can be easily assembled.”

The company’s biggest-selling mattresses, which are available at Costco.ca, are the 33-centimetre (13-inch) Bamboo Cool Comfort and 35.6-centimetre (14-inch) Sleep Science Copper-infused. Other popular items include the Sleep Science iFlip mattresses, designed for sleepers who are interested in a medium-firm feel one night and a medium-soft feel the next night—achieved by simply flipping the mattress over. “Each of our mattresses is created with a purpose, not just to make a thicker or similar version of an existing product,” Serven tells the Connection.

Not resting on their laurels

What helps to distinguish South Bay International from its rivals is its efficient business model and the company’s vertically integrated structure.

“We pour our own unique blends of foam and can control the quality of the entire process,” Serven says. “All of our mattresses are assembled in California in the same 217,000-square-foot facility as our customer service team, which takes great pride in assisting Costco members. We recognize that every person is unique, and so are their sleep preferences. That’s the driving force behind our success: to offer everyone a solution that will meet and exceed their expectations.”

Serven is particularly proud of the strong relationship she and her team have forged with Costco and its members, who consistently post overwhelmingly positive online reviews of the Sleep Science offerings they purchase.

She adds, “It’s Costco members’ opinions and experiences with our products that really count.”

Aces of base

Sleep Science’s separately sold Q-Series adjustable bases allow members to customize their horizontal comfort, thanks to the built-in features.

Raise or lower your head or feet, and tilt your pillow angle forward by up to 30 degrees to avoid neck strain while reading or TV bingeing. Zero gravity and dual massage are also available at the push of a button (depending on the base model), using an included 14-button wireless remote or a Bluetooth app from your smartphone.
