A century of trust

Jamieson Vitamins promises quality and purity in every product

by KRISTI YORK

Jamieson products are easy to spot in Costco warehouses, thanks to their distinctive green lids and the image of the brand’s ambassador, Jay the Leaf. For 100 years, consumers have trusted both the name on the bottle and the quality of the ingredients inside.

A healthy start

The company was founded in 1922 by Dr. Claire Edwin Jamieson, whose initial focus was on traditional pharmaceutical products like pain relievers. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the family business expanded to introduce Canada’s first vitamin C tablet, along with multivitamins and children’s vitamins.

Jamieson Vitamins, part of Jamieson Wellness, was sold to the Margolis family in the 1960s, but retained the name and pioneering spirit of its founder. In 2004, the company helped establish the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate, the regulating authority for natural health products in Canada. Jamieson was purchased by CCMP Capital Advisors in 2014 and went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2017.

“While much has changed over the last hundred years, one thing that will never change is our commitment to quality and innovation,” says Paul Galbraith, senior vice president and managing director, Canada, at Jamieson Wellness. “Our team continues to put our consumers’ needs first, and this has resulted in a century of trust.”

Commitment to quality

Jamieson earns that trust through 360 Pure, its industry-leading quality assurance program, and other marks of excellence displayed on its product packaging (see “Proof positive”). Jamieson sources the best ingredients from around the world and monitors how they are grown, harvested and processed. “We are committed to providing the safest, purest and most effective products on the market,” Galbraith explains. “We guarantee the [purity] of our ingredients, so our consumers can have confidence in the product they’re buying.”

A proudly Canadian company, Jamieson has deep roots in Windsor, Ontario. Most of its vitamins and supplements are made in its state-of-the-art laboratories there, and each product component is meticulously controlled, screened and tracked.

Jamieson is equally serious about its environmental responsibilities. “As a global leader in vitamins, minerals and supplements, we need clear plans for a healthy and sustainable future,” Galbraith says. “We have set ambitious but achievable targets, including a 50% emissions reduction by 2030.” The company also intends to reduce its environmental footprint with a 70% reduction in landfill waste, a 50% reduction in packaging cartons and a 50% increase in recycled materials in consumer packaging.

The company that started out as a small, family-owned business now has products in 40% of Canadian households and distributes to more than 45 countries. “We’ve been here for our consumers’ health for 100 years,” Galbraith says, “and we want to be here for 100 more.”
