“I believe that our stories have the power to change the world.” — COLIN KAEPERNICK

The power of stories

In his first children’s book, I Color Myself Different, Colin Kaepernick has written a joyful ode to people of colour based on real events from his life. The Connection recently asked him a few questions about the book.

Costco Connection What inspired this book?

Colin Kaepernick When I was 5 years old my teacher asked our class to draw pictures of our families. This unexpectedly ended up being a defining moment for me. Choosing to colour myself with a brown crayon and then colour my white adoptive family with a yellow crayon was a powerful moment in the process of my own identity formation and journey to self-love.

CC What is your greatest hope for I Color Myself Different?

CK My hope is that children will be able to see themselves in this book and that it can inspire them to love themselves and to move through the world with confidence, courage and authenticity.

CC Is there anything else you’d like readers to know?

CK I wrote this book because I believe that our stories have the power to change the world, and I hope they do exactly that.

Dav Pilkey fans rejoice: A new graphic novel series is here. The Cat Kid Comic Club features the adventures of Li’l Petey, Molly and Flippy.

Especially fun are the mini comics in each book in which Pilkey moves beyond his familiar illustrations with the use of acrylics, markers, clay, cardboard sculptures, photographs, paper collages and more.

The three titles in the series—Cat Kid Comic Club; Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives and Cat Kid Comic Club: On Purpose (Item 1618988) will be available in April in most Costco warehouses.—AL
