Backyard living
Costco’s outdoor structure program helps to create retreats at home
After refreshing my backyard, I thought an outdoor structure would be a great addition to create a room-like environment outside while adding protection from the sun and rain. Visiting Costco.ca, I was impressed by the selection of high-quality gazebos, pergolas and pavilions. These structures are made in various shapes and sizes from long-lasting, weather-resisting materials, such as beautiful cedar, sturdy steel, rust-free aluminum and easy-to-clean vinyl. And, as usual, Costco buyers go many steps further.
Unique designs
“We work with suppliers to design unique products,” says Costco buyer Angela Lang. “For example, the Melville gazebo is made with a rustproof, powder-coated aluminum frame and galvanized steel roof and cupola.”
She continues, “This gazebo includes the added value of a mosquito netting made of durable PVC-coated polyester mesh, which also helps to reduce wind and sun exposure. High-quality, spun-polyester curtains with hooks for hanging provide additional UV protection and are also included.”
The gazebo also has a double track system, allowing the netting and the curtains to be hung together. “It’s just more convenient for the members, to be able to use both functions at the same time. And the curtains can be really good if they want privacy walls,” says Stephanie Lefebvre, group vice president for Canada-based Costco supplier Sojag.
Natural beauty
Cedar structures add a beautiful touch of natural wood for blending into the outdoors. “All cedar is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council,” says Lang, and it is treated with an environmentally friendly water-based stain that contains mouldicide and fungicide.
“We do recommend that people restain or repigment the product every year,” says Randy Britton, executive vice president for Canada-based Yardistry, Costco’s cedar structure supplier.
A selection of cedar accessories, such as bar counters and privacy walls, comes in a matching colour scheme. “All cedar products are kiln-dried, making them easy to paint the same colour as your house,” says Lang.
Cedar gazebos, arbours and benches are also available in Costco warehouses.
Lang advises members to be sure to consult with the city and their homeowners association for building codes, zoning requirements and permits. “When sizing, the footprint is the length between posts and the canopy size is the shade area,” she explains.
