Tame the chaos

Organize and outfit your garage with a little help from Costco

by ANDREA TOMKINS

Garages and sheds are among the hardest-working areas of our homes. We demand so much of them, yet they are sometimes the last places we think about. Now that spring is around the corner, it’s time to prioritize this space and turn your thoughts to outfitting and organizing it.

The necessities

One easy way to tame some of the chaos is by setting up a car care station. Costco.ca has a variety of rolling racks and shelving units that are perfect for this purpose. Consolidating the tools you reach for frequently in one area (as well as the motor oil and windshield washer fluid you picked up at Costco) will go a long way toward keeping everything tidy.

Every car care station also needs the washes and waxes that keep your vehicle looking buff. The Auto-Chem Professional Car Care Kit (Item 1070242) has everything needed for cleaning your car, including car wash and wax with a wash mitt, polymer wax, vinyl and rubber protector, brushes, rim cleaner, an applicator pad and a microfibre cloth.

Another must-have: Kirkland Signature™ Ultra-Plush Microfibre Towels (Item 713160), made of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide for a scratch-free and streak-free shine. They come in bags of 36 and are machine-washable.

Speaking of vehicle maintenance and upkeep, Johnny Tso, Costco’s buyer for tires, batteries and wheels, says this is a great time of year to check your seasonal batteries. Take a look at Costco’s selection of marine, lawn and garden, and golf cart batteries at Costco.ca.

A shipshape shop

Have you misplaced a tool a few too many times? Perhaps your garage needs better or more storage. Think about all the ways you use the space and what you need to store, then look at the value and variety of garage storage and organization solutions available at Costco.

Consider, for example, slat walls. They’re a stylish way to cover walls and hang supplies and tools. Proslat 2.4-metre (8-foot) wall panels (Item 271285) are made in Canada from 90% recycled materials and hold up to 34 kilograms (75 pounds) per square foot. The panels are not affected by mould, mildew or water, so they can be used in damp locations where drywall and wood might absorb the humidity.

If you need room in your garage to tinker with your vehicle, you’ll definitely want to maximize floor space. The motorized Proslat Garage Gator (Item 1905071) lift easily raises, secures and stores up to eight bikes or up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of other gear, such as golf bags.

Another option is the Proslat Pro-Rack 2.4-metre (8-foot) Wall-Mounted Overhead Rack (Item 412718). This heavy-duty rack offers a combination of shelf and hanging space. Here’s a tip from personal experience: Make sure your bins are clearly labelled, especially if you are tucking them away on upper shelves that may be hard to reach. You’ll want to put away your seasonal tires where you won’t trip over them either.

It’s a good idea to set aside part of your garage as a dedicated workspace. Costco has everything you need for this too, such as the heavy-duty Vancouver Classics UltraHD LED Lighted Work Centre (Item 372328). It comes with everything you need for a work area: storage drawers, LED light with power strip, cantilever shelf, pegboard and a set of hooks. Hanging the tools you use most frequently within easy reach is a real time saver.

Don’t forget that a hard-working workspace also needs good seating. Check Costco.ca for a selection of swivel stools and mechanic seats.

If quality and value are important to you, Costco should be at the top of your list when it comes time to outfit and reorganize your garage this spring.

Take the floor
Don’t forget about flooring! Stylish and practical, UltraLock Black Perforated Garage Tiles will cover and protect your garage floor. Made in Canada from 100% post-industrial waste, the tiles are durable and easy to install, self-draining and easy to clean, and are resistant to oil, grease, petroleum and most household chemicals. —AT

A time to change
Johnny Tso, Costco’s buyer for tires, batteries and wheels, advises members to switch their winter tires to summer tires and rims once the temperatures start to hover around 7 C, because winter tires lose their effectiveness when driven in warmer weather.
