A pain in the gut

Treatments to help provide relief from symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome

by LAWRENCE VARGA

Do you suffer from frequent abdominal cramping, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation? If so, you may be one of the 5 million to 7.5 million Canadians who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Luckily, treatments are typically straightforward, focusing on a healthy lifestyle that includes moderate exercise and relaxation, as stress contributes to the problem; avoiding foods that trigger the symptoms; and eliminating excessive alcohol.

One type of diet that can help is low in fermentable sugars, which prevents the fluid buildup and gas caused by colonic bacteria. This diet, called a low FODMAP (fermentable oligo-saccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) diet, avoids lactose products such as cow’s milk, fructose-containing foods such as apples and pears, sweeteners such as honey and agave, certain vegetables, and wheat and rye. A daily intake of 20 to 30 grams of soluble fibre from psyllium or oatmeal has also been shown to be helpful. Unsurprisingly, good gut bacteria in the form of probiotics, specifically Bifidobacterium longum, have been shown to reduce bloating and improve frequency and consistency of bowel movements.

If these treatments do not help, you can try over-the-counter and prescription medications that provide either constipation or diarrhea relief, depending on the type of IBS you suffer from. Antispasmodics provide relief from abdominal pain and cramps by relaxing the muscles in the intestine.

Armed with this new knowledge, and through discussion with your health care professional, you can experience symptom relief, improve your quality of life and not be a slave to your ill-tempered gut.
