A day of remembrance
Every year on November 11, Canadians pause for a moment of silence to honour those who have fought for our freedom. This day recognizes the men and women who served in World War I, and all servicemen and servicewomen who have served in the military in times of war, conflict and peace.
Back story
REMEMBRANCE DAY is also known as Poppy Day. The deep red flower is worn because poppies were among the first flowers to bloom on the battlefields of northern France and Belgium in World War I. The Royal Canadian Legion, Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization, is behind the poppy campaign that raises funds in support of veterans and their families in need.
According to the organization, millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a pledge to never forget those who sacrificed their lives. The symbol should be worn on the left side over the heart.

GRATITUDE MONTH
He’s thankful and grateful
Costco member David George Brooke is a motivational speaker, life coach and author who’s driven to spread messages of appreciation. The Washington state resident’s experiences, including the loss of his parents when he was a young adult and later the loss of his wife of 11 years, forged a deep appreciation for the fragility of life and a desire to express gratitude—and help others do the same. To date, Brooke (davidgeorgebrooke coaching.com), who has trademarked the name “That Gratitude Guy,” has made more than 750 speeches and keynote presentations.
Brooke offers these tips to help cultivate a gratitude mindset:
Start your day with a power hour. Before looking at your devices, make your bed, journal, meditate, stretch and have a healthy beverage or smoothie.
Be aware of who you are hanging out with.
Once or twice a year, evaluate those relationships.
Monitor your self-talk and be kind to yourself.
Text someone each day. Tell them how grateful you are to have them in your life. It will make their day.

SUPPORTING GRIEVING CHILDREN
Help during tough times
Losing a loved one is difficult, especially for children. “If grief is not addressed or managed, it can lead to further mental health problems,” says Christina Walton, creator of The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada (childrensgrieffoundation.org).
Walton provides tips for supporting a grieving child:
- Model your own grief. Showing the child that it’s appropriate to show grief can help them express their feelings.
- Seek support for yourself, so you can be grounded and supportive for the child.
- Let the child know they’re not alone.
