The not-so-lazy days of summer

Happy Canada Day, everyone! The holiday reminds us to take pride in who we are. From coast to coast, we celebrate all of the things that make Canada and Canadians extraordinary. I am proud to live in this progressive, diverse and multicultural country.

A great way to celebrate everything that makes us Canadian is to throw—or attend— the ultimate backyard party, as our cover story suggests. Warm and sunny days make me think of my family’s summer outdoor pleasures: jumping off the dock, hosting cookouts and toasting marshmallows on an open fire. This issue offers great recipes using fresh summer ingredients, such as garlic, tomatoes or calamari. Alternatively, maybe a salad for your favourite meat lover will grace your picnic table.

Is a summertime reno on your to-do list? If so, have a look at For Your Home, this issue’s Special Section. For starters, check out the article on setting up a mud room. Now is the perfect time to pack away your cold-weather gear and reorganize this much-used space. Do you need to create a workspace for two? This issue can help you tackle that too. And my husband’s favourite piece of furniture—the recliner—is also featured this month. The best reclining furniture relaxes both your mind and body with features offering comfort and ease. Who among us doesn’t need to relax just a little bit more?

As we raise the ag and enjoy a warm evening of reworks, let’s all be grateful that we share this beautiful and welcoming country with each other.
